Full Public Key (npub)

A "pubkey" aka "public key" is one half of a keypair: your public key identifies you to everyone, like a username, while your private key proves you are really you, like a password. Others use this pubkey to find you on Nymchat, and you use theirs to find them. The same key has two formats — npub1… and hex — and they are interchangeable. The four characters after the # in a nickname are the last four of the hex format.

Key Backup

Each backup holds your private key and, when this device has it, your post-quantum recovery code. Your key stays yours: the backup is encrypted, and only your PIN or your passkey can unlock it. Back up again after your recovery code changes.

Save an encrypted copy in your Google account, protected by a PIN you choose. Google can't read the copy without your PIN. Restore it on another device with Continue with Google.

Create a passkey that holds an encrypted backup. Only the passkey can unlock it, and your passkey provider syncs it to your other devices. Restore it with Continue with a passkey.

Single Chat (Default)

Identity Encryption

Optionally protect your saved identity's (nsec) private key with a password, PIN, passkey, or biometric (Face/Touch ID) so it can't be read from this device without unlocking. Passkeys (synced or hardware security keys) and biometrics use WebAuthn where supported, with password/PIN as the universal fallback. On the unlock screen, holding the Nymchat wordmark for 2 seconds engages Panic Mode and wipes this device without unlocking.

Chat Lock

Locked chats leave the main list and open only after Face ID, fingerprint, a passkey or your passcode. Their notifications say only "New message". The list of locked chats syncs to your other devices; each device unlocks on its own.

Panic wipe also erases my other devices

When you hold "Your Nym" or the wordmark on the unlock screen for 2 seconds, every other device signed in as this identity also wipes this identity the next time it connects. Other identities on those devices are not touched. An encrypted identity that is still locked when you panic from the unlock screen can't send this signal.

Screen Security

Blur chats when you switch away from Nymchat. Browsers do not let websites block screenshots or screen recording. Always on inside locked chats and view-once media.

Incognito Keyboard

Turn off autocomplete, autocorrect and spell check in message boxes. The browser can't ask your keyboard app to stop learning; only Android keyboards support that.

Key Backup

Back up to Google or with a passkey from View or Edit Nym's Details, next to your nsec and post-quantum recovery code.

Generate Random Keypair Per Session

Generate a new random keypair on every session restart for improved pseudonymity. When disabled, your generated keypair persists across reloads.

⚠ Hardcore mode changes your identity after every sent message. PMs and group chats will not work reliably since recipients cannot reply to a constantly changing pubkey. Settings will not sync across devices.

Proof of Work Difficulty

Filters incoming messages by proof of work — it does not change what you send. Every message Nymchat sends is already mined to at least 16 bits, so 16 keeps Nymchat traffic and drops clients that do no work. Above 16 also hides messages from other Nymchat users, who mine at 16.

Verified Nymchat Users Only

Filters incoming channel messages to senders who proved they are running Nymchat, on the web app or the phone apps. Scripted senders cannot prove it and are dropped. Your own messages, friends, and Nymbot are always shown.

Accept Private Messages & Group Chat Requests

Control who can send you PMs and group chat invites. "Friends only" filters messages from non-friends.

Accept Audio & Video Calls

Control who can ring you with an audio or video call. "Friends only" silently ignores calls from non-friends.

⚠ Audio/video calls and P2P file sharing connect peers directly over WebRTC, which can reveal your true IP address to the other party. Use a VPN or Tor to help conceal it.

Quantum-resistant encryption

Post-quantum diagnostics

Private messages and group chats with other Nymchat users add ML-KEM-768 (a post-quantum key exchange) alongside the standard NIP‑44 secp256k1 ECDH, so both would have to be broken to read a message and traffic recorded today can't be decrypted by a future quantum computer. This is automatic and has no setting. Bitchat users and other Nostr clients keep receiving standard NIP‑17 exactly as before.

Disappearing PM (forward secrecy)

When enabled, your private messages include an "expiration" tag (NIP‑40) so relays/clients can delete them after the period chosen when enabled.

Read Receipts

Choose where senders can see when you've read their messages (✓✓). "Enabled everywhere" includes PMs, group chats, and public channels.

Show Status Indicators

When enabled, online/away/offline status dots are shown on avatars and in user profiles. "Friends only" broadcasts a hidden status publicly while privately sharing your real status with people you've marked as friends, so only they can see it. When disabled, your status is hidden from everyone, but you can still see other people's status indicators.

Cache PMs & Group Chats On Device

When enabled, decrypted private messages and group chats are stored on this device so they appear instantly on app launch. Disable if you'd rather not have decrypted message content kept at rest in app storage. Toggling off clears the existing cached PM/group data.

Blur Images from Others

Blur images shared by others until clicked. Your own images are never blurred. "Friends only" shows images from friends unblurred.
